Americans may think of themselves as part of the most prosperous nation in the world, but that doesn't mean they're all worth more than their global counterparts.
In 17 countries, the typical resident makes more than that of the typical American, according to a new report from Credit Suisse. In terms of median wealth per person, the United States lags behind nations in all over the world -- Europe, Asia and Australia, too.
A country's overall economic health seems to have little to do with how much its average citizens are making. Nations like Spain, Ireland and Italy far outpace the United States and Germany, despite skyrocketing unemployment and stagnating GDP growth.
